THE TOP GUN DRAG BUS
by COOLRYDES So-Cal CUSTOMS
This was a concept design that Kevin "CoolRydes" Zagar had in his mind for many year. After building and racing the NAZT BUS, and feeling peoples response to the bus drag racing. It did not matter if they were into VWs or not, they were amused by the idea that an old slow bus could even think about racing, much less do it with it's head held high. So like anything worth doing, Kevin and the crew took the concept to the full degree of ridiculousness.
Now here is where a 15 day build fits in. Having promised the promoters of a the famous Elite and Just Clean VW show in Las Vegas to have this vehicle at the October 3, 2015 show and realizing on September 15th they had not even started the build. We contacted the promoters to let them know we were not going to make it. The promoters reminded Kevin that he had given his word to have the bus there, and that was all that needed to be said. Kevin, being a man of his word decided to make the show, with the help of a couple of good friends / employees, some help from vendors, and a lot of luck they completed (at 4:30 am) the morning they were scheduled to leave for Las Vegas.
So what are you looking at ? It's a 1957 bus body, on a 1969 bug pan with full nickel plated Mendeola Suspension, a Rancho Pro-Street trans, 4 wheel CoolStop Disc brakes with Wilwood calipers, sitting on 10.5 inch Pheonix slicks. To power this baby down the strip it features an ARPM case, Deano Dynosour super flo heads, toped off with a turbo being fed by a Holley 650 double pumper.

THE MENDEOLA
WELL IT WAS TIME TO LET ANOTHER ONE OF OUR DEMO CARS FIND A NEW HOME. THIS TIME THE HOME WAS IN THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS THAT DOES NOT GET OUR SWEET OCEAN BREEZE. SO TO DEAL WITH THIS EXTREME HEAT AND LACK OF COOLING BREEZE THE NEW OWNER ASKED IF WE COULD ADD AN A/C SYSTEM. SINCE WE NEVER BACK DOWN FROM A CHALANGE WE SAID SURE. TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE DID TO MAKE IT A LITTLE COOLER. I GUESS THIS TIME WE MADE GOOD ON OUR COMPANY NAME COOLRYDES CUSTOMS

What a stock build on a custom builders page !!!! Yea, we did, or can do it too...... This little baby started it's life out in Belgium assembled back in March of 1956. Now torn down and put back 100% to it's original state (well maybe just a little better ;) Of coarse that is what we do, make things better. It features a number of Belgium only spec parts, including window glass, front sway bar, and riveted (instead of welded) 15 inch wheels. It also does not have a body number in the original location like the German built cars (stamped into the body below the vin tag) instead it is stamped into the right side inspection plate. It also does not have a made in Germany tag either, it never had one because it was not built there. Yes, by 1956 demand for these and different country DOT standards were all over the place, so Volkswagen would send cars disassembled to other countries for assembly. This somehow was easier to get them into said countries and save on import duties. To think this little beetle managed to retain most all of it's original parts including motor (now with an Okrasa engine kit) front beam, and transaxle. Yea, this is a numbers matching car after 59 years, WOW !!!!

The "SPEEDWELL" Oval
This car was built back in 2010 and started out slated to be a "sleeper" with no real style but the old Cal-Look of the 70's & 80's, with full modern day suspension made by Mendeola Suspension, and with a modern Fuel injection system. Kevin "CoolRydes" Zagar wanting to build a beetle that had never been built inspired by the old Speedway cars of yester year built a beetle that has been noted as the best bug in the USA, said that even till today has never been watched in either style or performance. The Speedwell Oval features a 300hp Turbo injected 2332cc engine, with a 5 speed Mendeola Transaxle, and full Mendeola Suspension, making this car as fast in a straight line as it is around turns. The Speedwell oval is a true marriage of "Style & Performance.

THE "NAZT BUS"
ANOTHER KEVIN "COOLRYDES" ZAGAR FIRST. WHILE OTHERS ARE BUILDING THE SAME AS THEY SEE AT SHOWS, KEVIN WAS INSPIRED BY THE DKP CARS OF THE 80'S. TO KEVIN THESE WERE THE BENCH MARK CARS THE DISPLAYED EXTREEMLY CLEAN CARS THAT COULD GO FAST TOO, AND HEY NWBODY HAD EVER BUILT A BUS (MUCH LESS A MICRO DELUXE 23 WINDOW BUS) LIKE THIS. STARTING WITH A 1960 23 WINDOW VAN HE BUILT IT INTO ONE OF THE FASTEST BUSES EVERY BUILT, AND HE COULD STILL TAKE IT TO A SHOW AND DRIVE HOME WITH TROPHIES.
THE BUS FEATURES FOUR WHEEL DISC BRAKES, A BUILT TYPE 1 TRANS, 2276CC MOTOR WITH 48 IDA CARBS, FULL AIR BAG SUSPENSION, LINE LOCK AND EVEN NITROS FOR THE TIMES WHEN HE WAS A LITTLE BEHIND ON THE DRAG STRIP. NEEDLESS TO SAY RUNNING 9.90 1/8 MILES TIMES WITH JUST THE MOTOR AND NO NITROS HE DID NOT HAVE TO USE IT MUCH.
